Tuesday, November 6th ELECTION DAY

Please read the below message from Jonathan Wilson and focus on the BOLD as points of emphasis;

As you know we have an election tomorrow, November 6th, and Brunson will be used as a precinct site. We realize that this is an inconvenience and disruptive, however, NC General Statutes allows the Board of Elections to use schools for this purpose and we must assist.

Security of our campuses and safety of students remains a top priority. This is of greater concern when we have unknown visitors on our campuses. As an extra precaution, we are asking that you take the following steps on November 6th.
  • Communicate with election officials and be clear of your expectations
  • Route voters in the most direct path to the polling site
  • Utilize exterior doors that lead directly into the poll site, if possible.
  • Ensure adequate signage is in place to direct voters as to which entrance to use, where voters are not allowed, etc.
  • Insist that poll workers wear official identification at all times
  • Do not allow use of student restrooms
  • If anyone without a visible ID is seen in a restricted area, they should be stopped, questioned and escorted to the proper location
  • Reserve staff/visitor parking spaces for voters
  • Be aware of bus traffic and make efforts to avoid conflicts
  • Use physical “stanchion type” or “rope type” barricades to restrict access
  • Close and secure any door that lead to restricted areas
  • Raise staff awareness, remind staff that voting will be taking place on campus, and direct staff to keep an extra vigilant lookout
  • Seek volunteer assistance
If possible…
  • Re-route students to minimize direct, unsupervised contact between students and voters
  • Increase staff presence around the voting area through the day
  • Adopt a policy that no student walks unsupervised in hallways around the voting area
  • Consider alternate arrival/dismissal locations and facilitate communication with parents regarding same
Please don’t hesitate to call if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks for all you do!

Jonathan Wilson, Security Director for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.
