WEDNESDAY MM - January 28th

Good Morning

See you all at the faculty meeting this afternoon. Sometimes we become numb with the the volume of information coming our way. We have tried to address this through fewer faculty meetings to honor your time. Yet we have found that the number of meetings does nothing to mitigate the volume of information. Please do your part to honor your colleagues and keep our meetings focused with an engaged presence as a member of the Brunson Team.

January 27, 2015

Dear STEM Education Advocates:

Congress is now considering legislation to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, otherwise know as No Child Left Behind. A bill is expected to move forward in the next two weeks in both the House and Senate education committees. Our Coalition has been meeting with House and Senate members here in Washington over the past several weeks to push for including provisions in this important bill that would establish STEM education as a national priority. We need your help getting this message heard.

We would like to invite you to join in this effort by sending as many emails as possible to your elected representatives in Congress expressing your support for STEM education as a national priority. We have set up a page on our website to help you do this, so all you need to do is click on this link and you can get started:

Send e-mails to Your Members of Congress Supporting STEM Education HERE.

Respectfully,

James Brown
Executive Director

Tuesday MM - January 27th

Good Morning!

Did anyone notice the aberration in the MM from yesterday.  I would like to claim that I did that on purpose, but I was just in a hurry.  So, I write tonight to avoid the morning rush

PTA birthday bash today - January and July

We are planning to take about 5 minutes of our staff meeting on Wednesday to share some celebrations around Learning Targets. Here are some possible sentence starters (but don’t feel limited!):
  • I was surprised to see that my students grasped ….
  • A student asked this great question about our target…
  • Learning targets helped my students realize ____ about their learning.
We’re excited to hear how learning targets are making a difference at Brunson!

dick gregory with dr. martin luther king jr
Each year, Wake Forest University and Winston-Salem State University collaborate to host a major celebration to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The theme of this year’s program is “On Common Ground: If Not Now, When?”
On Tuesday, Jan. 20, social activist, author and comedian, Richard Claxton “Dick” Gregory will present the 15th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day keynote speech at 7 pm in K.R. Williams Auditorium at Winston Salem State University. The event is free and open to the public.
Earlier in the evening, Wake Forest University will host an invitation-only banquet where students and faculty/staff from both Winston-Salem State and Wake Forest will receive the “ K.R. Williams Auditorium” award in recognition of their efforts toward improving social justice and building community.
Additional MLK Weekend Events
On Saturday, Jan. 17, Winston Salem State University will host the 2015 MLK Day of Service Read-In in the Donald J. Reaves Student Center from 9:30am to 12:30pm. The event is part of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service and is cosponsored with Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State University, Girl Talk Triad Chapter and Hands-On Northwest N.C. The Read-In promotes King’s legacy of service, literacy and community empowerment to children ages 4-10. Registration is required through Chelii Broussard at broussardch@wssu.edu.
Also on Jan. 17, Old Salem Museums and Gardens in partnership with Wake Forest will host a discussion based on clips from the movie “Freedom Riders” in the James A. Gray Jr. Auditorium, Old Salem Visitor Center at 2pm. The discussion is part of the National Endowment for the Humanities to screen films from their “Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle” series. The film tells the terrifying and moving, story of when white and black students rode a bus into the Deep South to protest segregation and Jim Crow laws. The event is free and open to the public.
On Sunday, Jan. 18, Wake Forest will host the 10th Annual GospelFest at 3pm in Brendle Recital Hall, Scales Fine Arts Center. This year the Office of Multicultural Affairs will host Gospel recording artist Jonathan Nelson with special guests Alexis Spight, Big Redd and the Wake Forest University Gospel Choir.

Here are some details due to the closing of schools today.
  • EOQ Math will be Thursday
  • EOQ science will be Friday
  • 3-5 grades need to be finalized before you leave on Wednesday, January 21st
  • K-2 report cards must be e-mailed to Kathy before you leave on Wednesday, January 21st
Missing a school day forces two actions
  • Place the missed day on a Snowflake day on the calendar
  • Place the snowflake day on a "L" day on the calendar
My interpretation of our calendar is
  • Snowflake day will be February 16th
  • February 16th was a PD day that will move to March 30th
PLEASE NOTE - this is my interpretation, the WSFCS leadership team will provide the directive for our day in the near future.

Stay safe on the roads, there are some accidents being reported.  See you all Thursday!

Wednesday MM - January 7th

Good Morning!

Be your best today and tell tales of wonder about the weather.  Incite their curiosity and make the mundane come to life!

Recess is not permitted when the temperature, including wind chill, is 32 or below.  If you look at the hourly "feels like" temperature on weather.com, it never rises above 26 degrees as the wind increases throughout the day.  Play board games and talk with Joel about the gym availability between 11:30 and 12:30.  He can schedule 10 minute lap intervals so your classes can participate in some major muscle movement.

Staff meeting today for all K-2 staff regarding the Math assessments.
