Summer Post #5

Good Afternoon!

I found a new adventure.  The $2.50 marketplace cinema is only $1.50 on Tuesday's with $1.50 popcorn or drink.  Last week we saw "The Great Gatsby" and this week "Mud."  Both were excellent and I have found that I attend to the movie in the theater differently than at home with stop, pause and rewind.  Not that one is better than the other, just a different experience.

Our students "Learn" throughout the summer, yet coming back to our school environment is different.  I believe it is our responsibility to vary the instructional tools we use to engage students in learning.  Just as I lost interest in watching movies at home, the trips to the theater have rekindled my appreciation for film and I now want to watch again at home.

I have heard from 4-5 staff members who expressed interest in the STEM event in Raleigh on August 13th.  I want to meet with the the "team" next week on Tuesday the 7th @ 11:30.  If you cannot make this meeting, zip me an e-mail and we can still get you on the carpool list for the trip.

I will attend the WSFCS Leadership Retreat for the next two days, hence the early posting of the Blog update.

Next week I will be in Learning Team facilitator training Wednesday-Friday.  Andy will be working with the HAG teams, Kathy with K-2 and I have the pleasure to serve 3-5.  In our efforts to improve LTM, we have imagined and planned for success.  I look forward to learning how we can create a space to utilize the Learning Focused Tools to impact our integration of STEM.

If you are available and willing, tentatively schedule Thursday the 15th as our envelope stuffing day to send letters to our families.  We are still awaiting word of our bus information and I will post more next week as I am sure to learn a lot over the next two days.

First Friday Gallery Hop is upon us as well as the National Black Theatre Festival.  Get out and enjoy life here or wherever your travels take you.

Until next week....

Summer Post #4

I have developed a new habit of watching TED talks while I eat my lunch.  They are between 5-15 minutes in length and engage me in learning and laughing.  Try this short TED Talk on Books and then go explore and find something that you want to learn about.

New Staff Alert!  Mrs. Suzette Lopez will be our 2nd grade Transitional Bilingual Teacher.   We have completed the full-time positions and have one PRT and  a 30% AIG teacher that still need to be hired.  Due to the budget passed by the legislature, we have been asked to delay offering these positions while our leaders determine the impact of the cuts to education.

One byproduct of our hiring and growth is some classroom movement as listed below;
  • Jennifer Castello (kindergarten TBE) in room 1
  • Angela Adams (1st grade) in room 13
  • Suzette Lopez (2nd grade TBE) in room 15
  • Bridgette Hollomon (2nd grade) in room 28
  • Charity Cota-Robles (4th grade) in mobile 38
  • Stephanie Ingram (ESL) in mobile(s) 35/40
  • Darcy Steele (3rd HAG) in room 25
  • Sara Davis (4th HAG) in room 21
  • Stacy Swanson (Tech Ed) in room 20/computer lab
I have completed a draft for our Specials schedule for the first 9 weeks.  In the draft form I have 7 time slots for specials and 4 teachers assigned to each slot.  Perfect to accommodate the 28 classrooms we serve, yet imperfect to provide common planning for each grade level.  Of our nine  learning teams can you use mathematical clues to determine how many teams do not have common planning?

The data presented of 9 teams with 7 slots could indicate that two teams are without common planning.  That is my current draft of the schedule, yet I have worked an alternative to have only one team without common planning and am looking at other options to provide consistency.  This is not proprietary information and you may visit the school and look over the draft anytime.  If you have input, leave a note or zip me an e-mail.

I promised you more details concerning the 19th-23rd and here they are!

Summer Post #3

Happy Friday!  We have one more week with our summer enrichment program.  The teachers and students have been a joy to have on our campus, but your work with our PBIS universals makes a major difference in the culture and climate of our building.

Here is a link to an Ed Week article that I would love if you could take 10 minutes to read and reflect on the state of our "relational trust."

We have a fantastic opportunity to learn from some STEM Elementary schools at the World View Partners Program.  The date of the conference is August 13th and we would support a car-full of Brunson Teachers to attend and learn.  Look over the conference registration form (It is free) and communicate with me if you are interested in making this happen.  We have some Burroughs STEM funds available to pay for travel and lunch on that day.

I have started to add dates to the calendar and encourage you to take a gander.  Click Calendar to view.

Below is another article that caused me to think.  Read at your leisure and please share with me and your colleagues what has been on your list of readings this summer.

High Quality PD for teachers

More next week including details on the 19th-23rd.  Enjoy the summer and Be.reflective

Summer Post #2

We have a new superintendent!  Dr. Emory has been meeting with small groups to listen and collect data to chart her course.  I so appreciate this method as I encourage all of our new staff to assess then shape the culture of our school.  Our very own Demarie Anderson attended one of her first sessions and was quoted in the W-S Journal. (click to open up the article)

Speaking of new staff....

James Dorsett - Music
Stacy Swanson - Technology
Sara Davis - 4th HAG
Darcy Steele - 3rd HAG
Jennifer Castello - TBE kindergarten
(Marcella will loop to 1st grade TBE)
Dr. Willie Stevens - 50% Local Assistant

We are still interviewing for

2nd grade - Spanish for TBE preferred
PRT
30% AIG Resource

Today Andy, Kim and I participated in a webinar with Myra Brooks from the Mid-Atlantic region of Expeditionary Learning.  It was an exceptional meeting that help to clarify opportunities to impact students through teacher support.  If you have 10 minutes, watch this video from May 2013 that aired on PBS.

Next week has me working on Rosters and Schedules while completing our staff with the hiring of the second grade and PRT positions.

The next blog will have
  • Team assignments
  • Opportunities for summer PD
  • Professional articles and readings
